Quote[]

"There may be dangers out there, but some souls just have to roam."

Biography[]

Ever since the onset of his prophetic dreams, Pete has been riding the rails with his old hound Duke. He has seen the best and worst of the world and he takes both in stride. Lately, it seems like every city he rolls into is suffering. Sometimes a flood; other times a fire. When he closes his eyes, he can hear every heartbroken soul cry for help. But when he set foot here in Oulu, he saw a city that rebuilt after their fire. Pete reckons if he can figure out the source of all this carnage, he can help those who need it most.

Defeated Encounters[]

Loss of Health

IN CASE OF CRIPPLING INJURY OR DEATH
The local authorities tell you about a badly injured drifter who has been seen around town. You find all of Pete's belongings in a old warehouse, but no sign of the man himself. Gain all of his possessions. You scour the city for any sign of him (Observation). If you pass, you discover him near death in a junkyard and he tells you the occult secrets he has learned as you take him to the hospital; retreat Doom Doom by 1. If you fail, the police let you know when they find his body. Whether you pass or not, discard his Investigator token.

Loss of Sanity

IN CASE OF INSANITY OR OTHER PSYCHOSIS
You find Pete wearing Duke's collar and digging frantically at the ground with his bare hands. His faithful hound is nowhere to be seen. Discard all of his possessions. He seems wary of you, but you try to lure him closer with food (Influence+1). If you pass, he happily leads you to some drool-covered objects; gain any number of Item or Trinket Assets from the discard pile with total value of 8 or less. If you fail, he whimpers and escapes into the night. Whether you pass or not, discard his Investigator token.

Origin[]

"Ashcan" Pete made his first appearance in 2005 in Arkham Horror: Second Edition. His full name is Pete Washburne.

Team Role[]

Travelling Around the World[]

"Ashcan" Pete is an all-rounder, with his well balanced skills he can take on any role in the team, filling the gaps of whatever is missing. He is obviously not as good that any specialist, but his loyal Duke Unique Asset allows him to be more versatile. Due to his ability to move fast and this versatility, Pete stands out more when playing with a small investigator group (4 or less) than bigger groups (6 or more).

Holy Water

Until the last drop

His passive ability allows him to compensate his lack of influence and give him access to much combos. A well known combination is with Sister Mary Sister Mary; after she uses her Holy Water to bless herself or any other investigator, Pete can pick it from the discard pile, using it and having the ability to keep an endless blessing, gaining in a loop the Item he discarded. This combination is usually worth the usage of the 2 actions needed, and can be applied to nearby investigators. This also works for any discardable item, like Dynamite, Kerosene, and so on. Despite this ability, an influence-oriented support investigator should be an excellent teammate.

His active ability allowing him to move fast through train paths, combined with with his starting position in Europe, makes him ideal to deal with all types of Encounters located in the Eurasian continent. However, it should be slower when needing to go out of these locations, notably to complete his personal story as he needs to go to random locations. Thus it is recommended to acquire a Ship Ticket Ship Ticket whenever it is possible to fully benefit from his active ability if he has to go over the sea.

A Few More Miles[]

Pete can focus on closing Gates, fighting Monsters and seeking Clues. Closing Gates is an easy way as Rome Rome is only to 1 space from his starting location, allowing him to improve Will; improving Lore in Shanghai Shanghai is a bit more far, but easily reachable, thanks to his active ability. Improving Influence is not very suitable, but if he has no Gate to close nor Clue to obtain, it is always preferable to sit on Istanbul Istanbul than on a generic space. Improving Observation is very interesting to boost his passive ability and help him gathering Clues, but San Francisco San Francisco is way too far for Pete to make it a priority; however if his Personal Story leads him to North America, he can take profit from the railways and make a small detour to improve his Observation. The same applies to the improvement of Strength in Sydney Sydney, but it is more difficult to reach, due to the lack of Train path. It can be better for him to find a Weapon as soon as possible.

Blight

Poor Duke

It is strongly recommended for Pete to pick an Ally as soon as possible to avoid to fail his Personal Story. The goal is to prevent discarding Duke on a random effect; Blight, Serpent Crown or Unexpected Betrayal are some diverse examples of what he can expect during a game. Trading an Ally from another investigator is the easy way; if not possible acquiring the lowest value Ally from the reserve is preferable due to Pete’s low Influence.

If not having any good influence-oriented support investigator like Charlie Kane Charlie Kane in his team, Gather Resources is an action that needs to be taken into consideration. Even if it is time consuming, keeping 1 or 2 Resource Resources is always better for acquiring his two key Assets: the Ally and the Weapon. To find a Weapon, there is also a way to team up with Roland Banks Roland Banks, William Yorick William Yorick or Wilson Richards Wilson Richards; they can discard for free the Item he needs, saving him one turn.
