Flavor Text[]

Quote[]

"I'm walking out that door, and I'm taking this book. Anyone who wants to stop me is welcome to try."

Bio[]

During the war, Mark witnessed horrors he could not explain, and he wrote of what he saw in letters to his beloved wife, Sophie. When Mark returned home, he discovered that Sophie was no longer human. One of the beasts that Mark had seen overseas had taken over her body, killing her in the process. Afterward, Mark's thirst for vengeance lead him to Helsinki, where some of these creatures had posed as German soldiers during the Great War.

Defeated Encounters[]

Loss of Health

IN CASE OF CRIPPLING INJURY OR DEATH
While you are collecting Mark's things, you smell smoke on the hospital. Gain all of his possessions. The hospital has been set on fire, and you run to Mark's room and try to carry him to safety (Strength). If you pass, Mark is able to tell you who set the fire; retreat Doom Doom by 1. If you fail, the smoke overcomes Mark, and he dies outside the hospital. Whether you pass or not, discard his Investigator token.

Loss of Sanity

IN CASE OF INSANITY OR OTHER PSYCHOSIS
You take custody of Mark's belongings and arrange to visit him in the asylum. Gain all of his possessions. To your dismay, Mark is convinced that you are a creature disguising itself as a human. You do your best to convince him that you are telling the truth (Influence). If you pass, he shows you sketches he made of the horrible monsters that he's been hunting; retreat Doom Doom by 1. If you fail, Mark screams accusations of murder at you. Whether you pass or not, discard his Investigator token.

Team Role[]

Mark Harrigan is very good at fighting monsters, but not much else. Perfect for the distracted or disinterested player who just wants the basics, as long as the rest of the team can pick up the slack.

His lopsided stats mean he may often run into trouble during encounters, but he partners well with gate closers that have no way to handle monsters on their own.

Rulings, clarifications, and reminders[]

  • Mark's passive ability prevents the investigator from becoming Delayed unless he chooses to become Delayed to pay for an effect. If the Lead Investigator or investigators as a group choose Mark to become Delayed, that choice does not pay for an effect, therefore he can negate that effect with his passive ability. This remains true regardless of his role in the decision making process and even if the Lead Investigator is Mark and he chooses himself.[1]
  • If an effect has a choice between two or more outcomes and Mark chooses to become Delayed or to gain a Detained Condition from that effect, he is Delayed or gains a Detained Condition, respectively. Mark is not affected by effects that say "become Delayed" or "gain a Detained Condition" without a choice.[2]
  • If an effect says, "Become Delayed unless," or, "Gain a Detained Condition unless," Mark is not affected by that effect, even if he chooses not to resolve the effect following "unless."[2]
  • If an effect says "…unless you become Delayed" or "…or you become Delayed" and Mark chooses to become Delayed from that effect, he is Delayed.[3]

Origin[]

Mark Harrigan made his first appearance in 2006 in Dunwich Horror, the 2nd expansion for Arkham Horror: Second Edition. His character is possibly partially inspired by sailor Steve Costigan.
