"To find a treasure like that, I'll risk a few poison darts."

Young Jack traveled the world with his father's archaeological expeditions. He acquired the nickname "Monterey" after a bout of quinine-induced jaundice turned his skin yellow. Once grown, Jack became an accomplished archaeologist in his own right. Now he must explore his own past. His father was found murdered with an arcane sigil carved into the old man's forehead. Here in Cairo, he has seen men wearing this sigil on pendants around their neck. It is time for Jack to start digging.

Defeated Encounters

Loss of Health

A lifetime of venom from spiders, scorpions and snakes is taking its final toll on Jack. Even as he struggles to breathe, he shares anecdotes about each of his belongings. Gain all of his possessions. He tells you he buried his best finds in a field, but cannot remember where. You spend hours digging that field (Strength). If you pass, you discover Jack was not lying; gain 2 Relic Unique Assets. If you fail, you exhaust yourself with no result. Whether you pass or not, discard his Investigator token.

Loss of Sanity

Jack has carved an arcane sigil into his flesh dozens of times. The asylum no longer allows him to access to his belongings for fear he will continue. Gain all of his possessions. He says he must keep digging and tears at his skin with his fingernails. You beg him to stop (Influence). If you pass, he calms down enough to explain the significance of the symbol and how to use it against the coming darkness; retreat Doom by 1. If you fail, the orderlies are forced to sedate him. Whether you pass or not, discard his Investigator token.

Team Role

Monterey is a versatile character best used for support. His stats make him ideal for expeditions, and his action can move the expedition away from an inconvenient space for free once per turn. This allows him to obtain strong artifacts for the team, or to simply push back Doom as often as possible. He can also help resolve research encounters as he moves between expeditions. Because of his high strength and starting weapon, he can become an excellent fighter if he's able to increase his Will during combat encounters. Because of his stat spread, he should be paired with an Influence character and someone who can deal with gates.

Monterey Jack is the name of a cheese, the name of a rat from a Disney cartoon, and a homologue of Indiana Jones (name of a place + name starting with J).

One of the Investigators in the original Arkham Horror board game published by Chaosium in 1987, in which he was the orange pawn.
